We spent more than 60 hours testing out 50 different models of gel seat cushions to narrow them down to a list of top performers, comparing features such as comfort, size, ease of use and cleaning ability.
The Bonmedico orthopedic cushion feels really comfortable to sit on, and it also allows you to maintain a healthy sitting position.
Even after using it for a couple of hours it still feels comfortable, and our testers reported there was no pain or discomfort in their backs after use.
This is a well-made, quality gel seat cushion with an ergonomic design, so great if you have a job that requires sitting for long periods.
We also liked that it’s easy to pack and carry around, so very mobile for taking back and forth between work and home.
On the downside, we didn’t like the bulge at the front as this forces you to spread your legs when sitting and can make it less comfortable for some people.
Also, over time the seat does tend to flatten and lose its shape a little, but how quickly this happens depends on how often you use it.
The back of the Posture cushion has a rubber cover which we particularly liked as it prevents the cushion from sliding about on whatever you place it on.
It also feels really comfortable and absorbs and distributes a person’s weight evenly; even after using it for a few hours our testers reported that their bums ‘didn’t feel at all numb’!
It’s also not as bulky as the Salosan Visco and can easily fit in a car seat.
However, we didn’t like that, after sitting on it for a long time, it can start to feel a bit hot and sweaty in a place you don’t want to be feeling hot and sweaty!
Furthermore, we feel this cover isn’t the most attractive on the market and is actually more prone to getting dirty.
What we immediately liked about the Supply24 cushion was its thickness.
At around 7cm, it’s thick enough to absorb a lot of weight and, once you sit on it, it has a good adaptation and molds effectively to fit your shape.
We also liked the polyester cover which was simple to remove and wash.
The size was good as well. At 45x43x7 cm, it will conveniently fit into a wheelchair, car seat, lorry or pretty much anywhere else that you can sit, making it really versatile.
However, we did notice an issue; the seat’s is a bit firm and may not be best when for long sitting hours, but this is a matter of personal choice and some people prefer a bit of a firmer seat, so we feel for the quality it’s well worth testing out.
The Sojoy felt immediately comfortable when used, which is its biggest selling point.
We also liked the fact that it adjusts to the shape of the body quite quickly and easily, and the gel is breathable, which means there was no overheating when sitting for extended periods of time.
Also, we particularly liked the ergonomic design, and the fact that it’s a versatile cushion means that you can use it in the office, with a dining chair or in the car, as well any other place that you need to sit down.
The main drawback with the Sojoy iGelComfort is its size as this is quite a large and bulky gel cushion compared to others available.
We also didn’t like how small the handle is as it can be a little uncomfortable to carry around.
The first thing we noted with this gel cushion is the good posture that it provided.
Your tailbone is immediately shifted backwards which means there’s no fatigue placed on your lower back.
Unlike the Bonmedico Coccyx seat cushion, there’s also no bulge at the front, so this is a much comfier option.
This is also not a bulky cushion, which makes it easy to carry and use in a variety of places, especially as it features a handy carry handle.
On the downside, the seat is a little thick which can raise your height, especially when driving or working at a desk. We also didn’t like the size as it could be too small for larger people.
We immediately liked the ergonomic design of the Supportiback. Once you sit down all the pressure points are well catered for and it feels very comfortable.
This cushion also doesn’t get hot after extended use and, unlike the Bonmedico Orthopedic Cushion, it’s not very thick.
However, we did notice that it does tend to feel a bit firm, which may make it not the best choice for people with coccyx pain, but how firm you like your cushion is very personal, so again we’d recommend testing this one out first before you dismiss it.
The Cushina cushion provides good support for the tailbone and coccyx, and there’s no resulting lower back pain and after sitting for a couple of hours.
We also liked that it went back to its original shape after use.
It’s also quite versatile and easy to carry around;you can place it in an office seat, car seat or any other place you want to sit down.
On the downside, it is quite thick which can make it a bit cumbersome.
We also noted that, while it will go back to its original position, the Cushina does tend to sink a bit too far.
This is the most affordable model on our list, and for the great price we loved how comfortable it felt.
This is thanks to the gel core that is surrounded by two layers of foam, which also ensures it molds well to the shape of your body.
We liked that it’s versatile and can be used in the car, office and kitchen – pretty much anywhere you can sit.
However, we didn’t like that it compressed a bit too much after extended periods of time, and we feel it’s also not the most durable of all the products tested.
That being said, for the price it’s well worth considering and giving a try.
Unlike regular cushions which are made from foam, gel cushions are made from gel, which means they can relieve pressure in the bum area by distributing weight evenly.
This makes it comfortable to sit for prolonged periods, which also helps to prevents and combat lower back pain.
The main benefit of gel cushions is that they’re more effective at distributing pressure than foam.
This means that they’re able to provide more cushioning to the bony parts of your bum, making sitting down much more comfortable.
They’re also advantageous for wheelchair users, as when a person moves, so does the gel on the cushion.
This help to protect the skin at the back by reducing friction.
Furthemore, maintaining an uncomfortable sitting position for a long period of time can result in the growth of ulcer.
Gel cushions help prevent this by providing a comfortable sitting, which is especially important for people whose job involves sitting for long periods of time, for example, office work or driving jobs.
Finally, as gel cushions have air vents, this helps to prevent the spread of microorganisms making them a hygienic option, while the air circulation this allows helps to keep the user cooler than with a foam cushion..
However, gel cushions do come with their set of disadvantages. For one, they do have a tendency to bottom out.
They have vents which means that they can leak and are sometimes not the most effective cushions on bumpy roads as they don’t compress as easily as foam cushions do.
Gel seat cushions can cost anywhere from £10 to well over £200 depending on the quality.
It’s well worth doing your research before you make any purchases, particularly at the pricier end!
Price is one of the most important factors to consider when buying a gel cushion.
This goes hand in hand with the quality. The higher priced models are very often high-quality cushions, but do your research before you splash out!
Secondly, the manufacturer will also determine the quality of the gel cushion, and you often won’t go far wrong if you choose a model from a reputable brand.
The dimensions of the cushion cannot be overlooked. You’ll need a gel cushion that fits perfectly on the seat of your wheelchair, car seat or office seat.
One that is too big won’t give you the comfortable seating that you need, and if it’s too small, it will move around as you sit which will add extra pressure.
Before picking a gel cushion test it out and feel how comfortable it is as this is ultimately what you’re trying to achieve.
The right gel cushion should provide ample support and provide comfort for a long period of time.
The Homecraft Anyway Cushion is the best gel cushion, in our humble opinion.
It’s built to support weights of up to 98kgs, so is great for people of different shapes and sizes, and it has a nylon cover for easy cleaning as well as, of course, being one of the most comfortable options we tried out.
It also has a square shape and can be used pretty much anywhere.
The Antidecubitus Liquid Floatation Cushion Square is the best gel cushion for wheelchairs. It has a square shape which allows it to be used anyway around, and it’s also effective in spreading weight around evenly and, therefore, relieving the pressure points.
