We spent more than 40 hours looking through the available methods for cleaning CPAP machines on the market. Cleansers, CPAP cleaning machines as well as mask and tube cleaning brushes were the most common ways to clean the CPAP.
After conducting tests on the different types of CPAP cleaners, we found the VirtuCLEAN CPAP and Mask Automatic Cleaner to be the best. It uses ozone gas which gets into the tight nooks and crannies where bacteria like to hide, is small and portable and very simple to use.
We also found 9 more CPAP cleaners that did a good job at disinfecting the CPAP machine. They were also very simple to use. We only required 2ml of the WILAsil Special Cleanser for CPAP Masks per liter of water to effectively disinfect the CPAP tube and mask. It also gives off a pleasant lemon smell. The VirtuClean uses ozone gas to disinfect the CPAP. We liked this as it could guarantee a complete and thorough cleaning. We found the equipment quite simple to use and it requires no maintenance which also means it is durable.
The VirtuClean is also quite portable which we found convenient in cases where a CPAP user needed to travel.
However, the equipment only works well with certain CPAP models and not with others. Models with a larger tube fitting simply didn’t work.
The Clyn O3N Ultra-Portable CPAP Cleaner and Sanitizer is simple to control with just a simple push of a button. We found that we didn’t need to add any settings as it was a simple plug and play device. This CPAP disinfector uses ozone which means we were guaranteed of a complete cleaning of the CPAP tubes.
However similar to the REAQER CPAP Cleaner Disinfector, it is not compatible with all CPAP models. It’s important to first check whether your CPAP machine has compatible tube fixing.
The BeautySu requires no maintenance which is something that we particularly liked. It is simple to use as well with a simple push of a button. We also liked that it pumps ozone gas into the CPAP which gets in every corner, nook and cranny for a complete cleaning of the equipment.
The main drawback that we found with the BeautySu is that like the HuaHong Portable Mini CPAP Cleaner or the REAQER CPAP Cleaner Disinfector , it may not be compatible with most CPAP machines.
The REAQER comes in a neat design. It is simple to operate with only a single button. We found it to be lightweight and portable and it could connect to most CPAP machines. We liked that it uses ozone gas which meant a thorough and effective cleaning of the CPAP.
On the other hand, we found that it was not compatible with all CPAP models. In case the model we were using was not compatible it rendered the equipment virtually pointless.
Like the VirtuCLEAN CPAP and Mask Automatic Cleaner, the Moocoo 2019 Upgraded CPAP Cleaner uses ozone gas to disinfect the CPAP machine. We found that it easily connects to most models available in the market. It is lightweight and highly portable. We also liked that it runs on a rechargeable battery.
The main downside that we found was with the lithium battery. In case the battery ran out, we had to wait until it has a decent amount of charge for us to disinfect the CPAP machine.
The Contour CPAP wipes are soft and very simple to use. Unlike the RespLabs Medical CPAP Mask Wipes, we found that these left a freshness smell. The antiseptic ingredients are completely natural which means that any residue that is inhaled will do no harm. We also liked the fact that Contour wipes are latex free.
However, they are made from cotton which means that in case they catch a sharp edge, the cotton can leave residue. We also found that they are not suited for reaching deep into the hose. For that we needed extra equipment.
The CPAP Cleaner, SoonCat Portable Mini CPAP Cleaning Machine gives off a pleasant lemon scent. We found it to be quite the powerful disinfectant requiring only 2ml per liter of water. By dipping the CPAP mask and hose together with the humidifier, we found that we could effectively clean the equipment with the WILAsil cleanser.
However, given that it is a chemical, were not keen on inhaling the residue as we were not sure whether it would cause any long-term negative effects on the lungs.
We found the hose cleaner brush to be particularly effective at reaching deep into the CPAP hose. We finished cleaning within a few minutes. The brush also reached into tight nooks which helped ensure that the tubing was completely sanitized.
We also liked that the package comes with an additional brush for getting to the elbow joints.
However, we didn’t like the ring found at the top of the brush. It stuck quite a few times near the connector of the tube.
This CPAP tube cleaning brush from IBEET is made from stainless steel. This makes it rust resistant. We liked the quality of the bristles. They felt soft and when we got to cleaning, found that they were very effective.
The tube cleaning brush extend 7 feet which means that we could clean the entire length of the tube easily and without any hassle.
However, this is not the best item for reaching those nooks and crannies where bacteria tend to hide and thrive.
We noticed that these mask wipes are very soft and easy to use. We were done cleaning the CPAP mask within a few minutes. We also liked that they didn’t leave any residue on the mask. We also found that we could use them with a CPAP brush to reach into the tubing.
However, we didn’t notice any difference after we were done using them. We were expecting a freshness smell but there was actually no smell at all.
The Clinell wipes come in a pack of 200. We found using them very simple and convenient as we had a reliable supply of CPAP cleaners for a long time. They are also very effective and left a clean fresh smell on the mask and machine. The fact that they are bleach free makes them safe to use.
On the downside, they are not the best wipes to use on rough edges of the CPAP machine as they do leave residue behind.
A CPAP cleaner is an equipment that is specially designed to Clean CPAP machines. You simply put the CPAP inside the cleaner which then pumps ozone gas through the tubes and kills any harmful bacteria.
CPAP cleaners could also be specially formulated disinfectants that kill harmful bacteria and any residue left on the CPAP will not cause any harm when inhaled.
You can also consider a special rod for reaching into the CPAP tubing when cleaning as a type of CPAP cleaner.
CPAP cleaners are more thorough in cleaning the CPAP machine. Bacteria and mold often hide in the tight crevices of the CPAP where it’s hard to reach with a wipe or cloth. CPAP cleaning units pump ozone gas into every corner and crevice thus providing complete disinfecting of the CPAP machine.
CPAP cleaning units use ozone gas. This is safer than cleaning the equipment with chemicals which can leave traces and get inhaled when using the CPAP. Such chemicals have been known to result in negative reactions.
On the other hand, CPAP cleaners do come with a few disadvantages one of which is the size. Since they come in different sizes the unit you choose may not be compatible with your CPAP machine.
Ozone gas evaporates quickly. However, it may make the CPAP machine uncomfortable to use as ozone gas is not very pleasant to smell.
Depending on the type of CPAP cleaner you choose prices will start from £10. Some automatic CPAP cleaning units on the other hand can cost as much as £250.
If you choose to go for a CPAP cleaning unit, you need to ensure that it is compatible with your model of CPAP. That means the CPAP machine should fit neatly into the compartment including the mask and hose, if this is the type of model you are want to buy. The cleaning unit should also be able to close neatly without being forced.
The second thing you want to consider when choosing any type of CPAP cleaner is how effective it is at killing harmful bacteria and pathogens. If the CPAP machine is not well disinfected, you may find yourself getting sick more regularly.
Cleaning the CPAP machine should not be a strenuous task. If it is then chances are high you will skip on days when you are supposed to clean your CPAP. The CPAP cleaner you choose should thus be simple to use.
Lastly, the CPAP cleaner should allow you to dry your CPAP. If water droplets are left in the tubing for example, they can create a breeding ground for mold, bacteria and other pathogens that can cause you to fall ill. Ensure that your CPAP machine is always dry.
CPAP cleaners will disinfect the CPAP machine helping to get rid of disease causing organisms. The lack of regular cleaning of the CPAP machine causes the user to fall sick more often.
Ozone CPAP cleaners offer the best way to clean the CPAP machine. The nature of the gas allows it to reach every corner of the machine where bacteria could be hiding, killing them instantly.
The RespLabs Medical Inc mask and hose cleaner brush is the best CPAP mask cleaner. The wipes are effective and simple to use and then hose cleaner allows you to reach far into the mask tubing.
