Wordtracker

Wordtracker is a service that compiles and tells you how popular the keywords are that you’re using to get people to your web site. Wordtracker seems to me that it’s redundant as places like Overture do the same thing when you sign up for them, showing how many clicks are available for different keywords you’re bidding on. Wordtracker basically crawls the web from what I can see, and reads meta-tags of web sites to create their database. This really doesn’t tell how much traffic is going to them, just the keywords others are using.

What you really need is the information from the search engines themselves to see what people are typing in, not what webmasters use in their web sites. Instead of Wordtracker you can easily visit your top 20 competitors and see what keywords they are stuffing into their meta tag section of their web page with notepad. But I’ve heard some good things about Wordtracker so if you don’t have many keywords, you might want to give it a try. At this point I recommend Word Tracker.

  1. Hi Jason,

Thanks for your recommendation – I just wanted to clarify a couple of points here – firstly, what you’ve described as Wordtracker’s method is only a very small part of the picture. The process you mention, looking at other site’s meta tags, is what helps to feed our Related Keywords tool, which is a part of the toolset that helps users expand their thinking about keywords, and suggests other aspects of the niche that they’re researching. It’s useful because it can suggest keywords that may not come up even in the most intense brainstorming sessions, and because the functionality of the tool is such that you can dig deeper into the results given by the Related Keywords tool, it’s a quick and straightforward way of building large keyword lists to asses.

The main database is made up of real searches made by real people. These searches are typed into metacrawlers such as dogpile.com and metacrawler.com, and our database accounts for just under 1% of US search – of course, a guide to the search volume on the keywords in the database is also provided, along with unique and focused competition metrics. Subscribers can also currently access Google AdWords Keyword tool data in Wordtracker, giving a more flexible view of search behaviour.

I hope this explains things a little more clearly – but if you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at support@wordtracker.com.

    All the best,

    Mal
